YAG laser capsulotomy
(posterior +/- anterior)
After cataract surgery, the natural capsule holding the plastic lens in place can become cloudy over time (capsular opacification).
YAG laser capsulotomy can be performed in the out-patient department using local anaesthetic eye drops. The procedure is painless and takes only 1 - 2 minutes to perform per eye.
YAG laser peripheral iridotomy
In some people, the space at the front (anterior chamber) is quite narrow. This increases the risk of acute angle closure glaucoma - a condition where eye pressure can suddenly rise and cause permanent damage to vision.
YAG laser peripheral iridotomy can be performed in the out-patient department using local anaesthetic eye drops to create a small hole in the iris. This helps to reduce the risk of having a sudden rise in eye pressure. The procedure is painless and takes only 1 - 2 minutes to perform per eye.
Retina laser (standard)
Retina laser can be used for several different situations, for example, to:
-
help create a seal around a retinal tear to reduce the risk of progression to retinal detachment
-
reduce the oxygen requirement by the retina in order to help prevent 'nasty' blood vessels from growing in conditions such as diabetic retinopathy.
Retina laser is performed in the out-patient department using local anaesthetic eye drops. The procedure take between 5 - 15 minutes per eye, depending on the amount of retina laser required. This type of laser may need to be repeated several times in order to achieve the full effect.
Retina laser (sub-threshold)
Sub-threshold laser is a very gentle laser technique performed in order to achieve a clinical effect without leaving any visible scarring. It may be used for:
-
Macular oedema (for example in diabetic maculopathy) where other treatments may have failed or if patients are needle-phobic and cannot tolerate intravitreal injections
-
Central serous retinopathy if patients are unable to easily / quickly access PDT treatment
Sub-threshold laser is performed in the out-patient department using local anaesthetic eye drops. The procedure take approximately 3 - 5 minutes per eye.
